Compass Greenfield Development (“CGD”) is pleased to announce that Almonte BESS 1 and Almonte BESS 2 projects have achieved commercial operation.
With these milestones, CGD has now brought both the first E-LT1 BESS project and the first LT-1 BESS project from contract award through to commercial operation. These projects reflect CGD’s ability to develop, finance, construct, and commission battery energy storage projects efficiently and in partnership with key stakeholders.
The two co-located battery energy storage projects are contracted with the IESO through the Expedited Long-Term 1 and Long-Term 1 procurement processes. Almonte BESS 1 is a 4.999 MW project owned by Walker BESS 4 Inc., and Almonte BESS 2 is a 9.99 MW project owned by Almonte BESS Inc.

Almonte BESS Inc. is a partnership between the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation and CGD, with a 51% / 49% ownership split. Almonte BESS 2 is the first LT-1 project to achieve commercial operation, providing additional capacity and flexibility to Ontario’s electricity grid.
CGD wants to sincerely thank everyone involved in bringing these projects to completion, including the Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation administration team, leadership and the community, Selkirk Advisory, Black & McDonald, WorkBench, and Antler Group.
