Compass Greenfield Development is pleased to announce that three of its solar projects have been selected through the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO) Long-Term 2 (LT2e) procurement process.
The Golden Leaf, Elmbrook, and Cedar Agrivoltaics projects will contribute new emissions-free electricity to Ontario’s growing power system at a time when demand is expected to rise significantly.
The Golden Leaf Agrivoltaics Project, located in the Township of Drummond/North Elmsley, Ontario, has approximately 9 MWac of solar capacity. The Elmbrook Agrivoltaics Project, located in Prince Edward County, Ontario, has approximately 19.2 MWac of solar capacity. The Cedar Agrivoltaics Project, located in the Municipality of West Grey, Ontario, has approximately 17.6 MWac of solar capacity. All three projects are being developed as agrivoltaic facilities, integrating sheep grazing with solar generation.
Partnership with First Nations Communities
Each of the selected projects is being developed in partnership with First Nations communities:
- Golden Leaf Agrivoltaics – Algonquins of Pikwakanagan First Nation
- Elmbrook Agrivoltaics – Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte
- Cedar Agrivoltaics – Chippewas of Saugeen First Nation and Chippewas of Nawash Unceded First Nation
These partnerships are central to the development of the projects and ensure long-term shared benefits.
Supporting Ontario’s Energy Transition
The LT2 procurement represents one of the first major investments in new large-scale renewable energy in Ontario in more than a decade, with multiple projects approved across the province. At the same time, electricity demand is projected to increase significantly, with forecasts indicating it could rise by as much as 65% by 2050.
“Part of our mission is to support decarbonization of the energy systems and we think that means a lot more electrification, and when it comes to electrification green energy of course provides carbon free power, but it’s also low cost on a dollars per kilowatt hour basis,” said Jonathan Cheszes, President, Development at Compass Greenfield. In collaboration with municipalities, landowners, and Indigenous partners, these projects are expected to support local economic activity while contributing to a more reliable and sustainable electricity system.
Continuing to Grow Our Portfolio
These awards further expand Compass Greenfield’s growing portfolio of solar and battery energy storage projects, which now includes 40 MW of operating projects, nearly 60 MW of contracted projects, and over 570 MW of projects in development.
